AZALI Assoumani was born on December 31, 1959 in Mitsoudjé, Grande Comore.
After obtaining his baccalaureate in 1977, he entered the Royal Military Academy of Meknes in Morocco, from which he graduated in 1981 with a parachutist certificate.
Back in the Comoros he rose through the ranks in the Comorian armed forces; from Chief of Section at the Voidjou Training Center (1981-1983) to Chief of Staff of the National Development Army (1998-1999).
In 1999 he led the interposition of the army to avoid civil war in the midst of the separatist crisis on the island of Anjouan.
Having become Head of State, he initiated a process of national reconciliation which, through the assizes of Fomboni, gave birth to a new constitution which he had adopted in 2001. The latter transformed the Federal Islamic Republic of the Comoros into the Union of the Comoros. , granting broad autonomy to the islands.
As part of the April 2002 elections, Azali Assoumani resigned to run for the presidency, elections which he won with 75% of the vote.
He became the first president of the Union of the Comoros from 2002 to 2006. During his mandate, he led the country to reconnect with the IMF and the World Bank, and undertook major projects such as the opening of the University of Comoros.
On May 26, 2016, he again became President of the Union of the Comoros.
